Falta Assembly Elections: Mamata Banerjee has suffered a major setback just before the elections in West Bengal’s Falta assembly seat. Mamata Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress (TMC) candidate, Jahangir Khan, has withdrawn from the election just 48 hours before voting. Jahangir announced this in a press conference on Tuesday. Falta is one of the seven assembly seats in the Diamond Harbour Lok Sabha constituency, where Abhishek Banerjee is the MP.
It should be noted that voting for the second phase of the Bengal Assembly elections took place in Falta on April 29th. During this, tape was found stuck on the BJP button in EVMs at some booths. There were also reports of EVM malfunctions at several other booths. Following this, the Election Commission ordered a re-vote on May 21st. The results will be declared on May 24th.
Jahangir Khan made the announcement at a press conference at his home in Kamardanga Khan Para, Falta. He also praised Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari for the special package proposed for Falta. Jahangir Khan said, “I want Falta to be peaceful and prosperous. My dream has always been for Falta to become a golden Falta. Therefore, our Honorable Chief Minister is offering a special package for Falta’s development. For the development of Falta and the benefit of its people, I am withdrawing from the May 21st elections.”
Regarding Jahangir Khan’s decision not to contest the election, TMC spokesperson Arup Chakraborty said the party was informed of Khan’s decision. However, it is not yet clear why he did so.
I will not bow down,’ he said, making headlines.
During the election campaign, Jehangir Khan appeared in the style of Allu Arjun’s film “Pushpa.” In large public meetings, he openly challenged his opponents by uttering the film’s dialogue, “Pushpa Raj… I will not bow down.” However, the government has changed in Bengal. For the first time in 75 years since independence, the BJP has formed a government in Bengal. After the BJP’s formation in the state, Mamata Banerjee’s “Pushpa” (the “Pushpa”), Jehangir Khan, has bowed down. He is also praising Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari.
Jahangir Khan sought anticipatory bail from the Calcutta High Court
Earlier, Jahangir Khan filed an anticipatory bail application before a single-judge bench of the Calcutta High Court. He fears he could be arrested before the voting date. A single-judge bench headed by Justice Saugata Bhattacharya accepted his application, and the case will be heard in the second session on Monday, starting at 2 p.m. In his application, Khan alleged that the police filed an FIR against him based on fabricated charges
